Your Online Brand

Should I Build An Online Brand?

The answer is you probably already have. If you’re using LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Snapchat, or any one of the many social networks, you are out there for the world to see and this could have a very positive, or very negative impact on your career opportunities as employers routinely view potential employees social media accounts.

Take Stock

Before you start building your brand, you need to take stock of what you already have. Do you have a Facebook account? Would employers feel comfortable hiring you if they saw your Facebook account? Would you employ someone with a similar account? It is usually best to keep your professional life and your personal life separate, so unless you’re using social media to boost your career you should keep all content you post online accessible only by the people you want to see it. Do this for all your social media accounts.

Build Your Network

Between 70% and 85% of roles are filled by networking. It’s like that age old saying, its not what you know, its who you know. So if you haven’t already, open a LinkedIn account and connect with your colleagues and peers, and follow the businesses you have interests in, and have aspirations to work for, but don’t go crazy, having 5,000 random connections is not nearly as powerful as 250 close connections you have history with.

Create Content

Get creative. If you have something of interest to share, write and post an article, if you read a great article, share it, and comment on articles and posts you have read by your peers. Just remember to keep your LinkedIn content professional and relevant to the field you work in.

Endorsements

Having your skills listed on your LinkedIn page is a great way for employers to see what you can offer, and having your skills endorsed by your peers and clients really reinforces your skill set, and the more endorsements you have, the better your rating.
